New approach of NABARD for rural development

Moving away from its grants approach, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has now started giving direct loans for implementing resource management projects in collaboration with German Development Co-operation GTZ and KfW Bankengruppee.

Of the total amount of 19.4 million euros, 15 million is being given as loans. The remaining 1.4 million is being given as grants. While grants have been funded by GTZ, the loan amount has been given by KfW. Known as the Umbrella Programme on Resource Management (UPNRM) project, it focuses on livelihood enhancement of the community. Also watershed management and tribal development are major areas of emphasis of the project with sustainable harvesting of forest products, water, vegetation and other resources.

The project will be monitored in the Western region, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Goa through Pune. Bangalore will monitor it for the southern region and Lucknow for the rest of the nation.
